Happy Earth Day!

http://www.youtube.com/earthdaynetwork#p/a/u/1/rb8cV7y8fxg

Today is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, a day funded by the u.s. Senator Gaylord Nelson to inspire appreciation and awareness for environmental causes. Every year, more than 500 million people in 164 countries participate in Earth Day festivities!

While great progress has been made for the last 40 years, climate change brings new challenges. To address these threats, we must fundamentally change the way we innovate, produce and consume. Change can be as little as turning off the lights when you leave a room, riding your bike instead of taking the bus, or planting trees.

Don’t forget to visit Earth Day Network’s website and add your “act of green” among others!

  1. Thanks for the post. I am going green today. Had to walk to work and i will be doing same after work. If i had more time i would have planted a new tree today but i will do that sometime again to save our planet our children and our childrens children. Whilst celebrating earth day i think Michael Jackson(may his soul rest in perfect peace) just flashed in my memory with his best ever song for the earth. 2. The disruption of flights across Europe was a major lesson for our world leaders towards issues of Climate Change. Many meetings were cancelled, many events we stopped and most importantly, many world leaders could not attend the funeral of the Polish President, his wife and other prominent members of the Polish cabinet who died in the plane crash. Their non-Chalant attitude towards issues of Climate change must have cost them a lot during the short period. It is my hope that they will begin to look critically into committing more time and resources towards making our planet greener. While I wish everyone a greener Earth day, I will like to say that we also as individual development practitioners must endeavour to focus on our communities and ensure that sharp practices that endanger our planet are brought to a halt and together we would make our world a better place to live in. HAPPY EARTH DAY

  3. We all know that dangers looming large on the earth. To celebrate the the Earth Day, awareness campaigns, educational programmes, painting competitions and other activities are organised across the globe to spread the message of saving the earth. But every effort will go in vain, if each and everyone of us don't take initiate to save the earth.

We all talk about dangers, and problems, but now its time to take action. Let's PLANT A TREE today. A small action will definitely yield fruitful results and our future generation will thank us for providing them with a healthy environment to live in. Of course, we will also live longer.

In Delhi, the national capital of India, group of students have launched a campaign to save the polluted river, Yamuna that flows through Delhi. Yamuna river plays an indispensable role in the lives of Delhi residents, including me. This river is the main source of river in every house. But Unfortunately, it carries untreated domestic water and industrial wastes of the city. Hence, this campaign will take us closer to our goal i.e SAVE EARTH.

  4. As i came out of my room today i was face with this hot scourging sun telling asking me what am doing on World Earth Day to save the earth for my unborn children or is it going to be just some selected people going to sit at round tables to drink tea to commemorate the day without any significant impact. I realized that planting just 200 seedlings on GYSD is not enough to save the earth for the next generation so am rushing out to get a thousand, no million, billions of seedlings, is still small i think i need the whole world to plant trees to save the earth for the sweet kids i will have and my great great great grand children. lets Heal the World and make it a better place. Michael am singing this song with you now

  5. On this Earth Day, I am promising myself to try and "Go Paperless" next year. I am a former high school debator who used thousands of pages of paper each year, and I was inspired by a recent article in an American newspaper about debate teams who are storing their files electronically to save paper. (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/18/education/edlife/18debate-t.html) As a neurotic record-keeper, I like to have a paper copy of anything I write or work on. Working with YPWC this year has made me realize the possibilities of using digital file storage and communication, however - I've been inspired by the way YPWC members manage to jointly write grant proposals, plan projects, and manage meetings from different locations around the country using only computers and mobile phones. Of course, there are environmental concerns with electronics, too - I often forget to unplug my computer when I'm done - but it's good to remember that the digital age can be beneficial for the environment as well as for youth engagement.
